Cannabis, marijuana, weed, call it what you want, it’s all good. Cannabis comprises of many cannabinoids, but there’s two main compounds that are typically associated with the plant: CBD and THC.

CBD, short for cannabidiol, is one of the two most potent natural chemical compounds found within the cannabis plant. This is a non-psychoactive compound which means it does not get you high (unlike THC which we will get to after). CBD is one of the most popular, new herbal remedies thanks to the new federal legalization of cannabis. CBD is legal across the nation; however, cannabis is not legal everywhere in the world. CBD’s benefits can include anti-anxiety, anti-inflammatory properties, pain relief, better focus, and much more. There are products that are purely CBD with no THC in it, however, the edibles we will be talking about in this article will focus on cannabis which contains both CBD and THC (sometimes referred to as “full spectrum”).

Tetrahydrocannabinol, called THC by most, is the most potent of the two popular compounds found in cannabis. THC is an ionic compound that refers to the ‘high’ that is associated with cannabis. Most edibles that you come across at your local dispensary will be cannabis edibles that contain both THC and CBD and can thus get you high.

What Are Edibles?

What are edibles? Cannabis edibles are any food item that has been infused with cannabis, which includes THC and/or CBD. Cannabis edibles will vary in taste, potency and types of cannabis infusions.

Pure CBD cannabis edibles are those that contain no THC and are thus not cannabis rather than just an extract of CBD that comes from hemp. Since these can be difficult to access, we will be covering our favorite edibles that contain both CBD and THC as they come from the cannabis plant. Every producer of edibles has a different recipe and will result in similar effects, but different tastes. Even if two different companies are making cannabis gummies for example, they may taste different, have different potencies, and even be made up of different compounds (for example, cannabis edibles which contains both THC and CBD, or just pure CBD marijuana edibles).

Whether it is a good excuse to satisfy your sweet tooth or you like eating lil’ mini flavored dinosaur marijuana edibles and pretending you are in the prehistoric age (just me? ok), gummies are a fun and favorite treat. What is better than having your favorite treat while also getting a good dose of happiness?! Marijuana edible gummies usually contain both CBD and THC, so they are sure to leave you feeling that euphoria that comes from smoking weed.

Weed edible gummies are becoming a priority for cannabis edible producers. Their fun, bright colors (and did we mention cool shapes like dinosaurs? We did? Ok well yeah, dino shapes!) and their fruity bursts of flavor make it a great replacement for the burning throat and lungs from smoking. For those who love getting high, but don’t like to smoke or vape, edibles could be your next best ‘bud’ (I had to make at one dad joke to make up for all my dinosaur comments…)

Canada has announced that as of October 17th, 2019, edibles will be coming into government circulation, making it legal for the production and purchase of edibles. The new government circulated edibles are set to hit the shelves around December due to the 60-day processing time that companies must take with Health Canada in order to sell them.

In the U.S., where weed edibles are already available in several states in which recreational pot is legalized, gummies are more popular than ever. According to BDS Analytics. During the first four months of 2019, 17 of the top 20 selling ingestible products in California, Colorado, and Oregon were gummies!

If you are over the boring facts and statistics about weed edible gummies and you are already sold on getting a handful of canna-candies, then you may be interested to check out your local cannabis store or shop online, because odds are they are stocking these yummy gummies already.

Getting Baked: Marijuana Cookies

Anyone else just picture the Cookie Monster on marijuana THC edible cookie? Well, there’s a visual for ya. One of our favorite ways to put weed into our systems not only because we can make these bad boys at home, but they’re just so easy to eat. Hello, cookie dough, chocolate chips, and weed? You don’t know me yet but we’re going to fall in love.

We are stepping up and away from our brownie game (you’ll still hold a place in our hearts, ye olde Brownies), and moving on to our new chocolatey, chippy best-friend: the marijuana THC edible cookie.

Most marijuana THC edible cookies are made using cannabutter, the abbreviation for cannabis butter, which is a method using cannabis to extract the THC from the buds into butter. This “budder” is then used to make the cookie dough(pe) – get it? Dough… dope… dough-pe… You get it. This is the easiest way of ensuring that your cannabis cookies ‘work’ in terms of giving you the same effects that smoking brings to the table. Some people choose to cook with the buds themselves for strong edible dosage, but due to its instability in this form or because of texture/taste issues we recommend just sticking to baking with cannabis oils/budders.

Your new favorite recipe for Mary-J cookies could be this one (*hint* cookies can be low-fat, super-sweet, semi-sweet, loaded with stuff or plain Mary Jane… it’s up to you!). Here are the ingredients necessary to make infused edibles for this marijuana cookie recipe:

● 3/4 cup cannabutter
● 2 large eggs (or egg alternative)
● 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
● 1/2 cup white sugar
● 1 tbsp vanilla extract
● 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
● 3/4 tsp of baking soda
● 1/2 teaspoon fine salt
● 1 bag (12 oz) semisweet or dark chocolate chips
● Optional: 1 cup walnuts, chopped, or 1/2 cup pretzels, crushed, for extra texture

Making A Fresh Batch: Marijuana Chocolate Chip Cookies

1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (turn on the convection setting if the oven has it).
2. Next, grease two cookie sheets with normal butter or line them with parchment paper. If you only have one baking sheet, let it cool down completely before using it for the second batch of cookies.
3. In a small saucepan, melt the cannabutter and then allow it to cool down slightly. Alternatively, place the butter in a microwave-safe bowl and heat in bursts of 30 seconds until it’s completely melted.
4. Place the eggs, brown and white sugar, and vanilla in a large bowl. Add the melted butter and whisk until the contents are smooth.
5. Then, in a separate bowl, whisk the flour, baking soda, and salt. Once the dry ingredients are incorporated, slowly stir the dry ingredients in with the wet ingredients. Do not overmix.
6. Fold in the chocolate chips and the other optional ingredients, if using.
7. Scoop out about 1/4 cup of cookie dough for each cookie and drop onto the prepared pans. Ensure there are about 2–3 inches between each marijuana cookie.
8. Bake cookies for 12 to 16 minutes. Cookies baked for shorter periods of time will be chewier while cookies baked longer will be crunchier. Wait for the pan to cool for a few minutes before you transfer the marijuana cookies to a rack for cooling.
9. Store the marijuana chocolate chip cookies in a sealed container. They should last for about five days.
BAM! Enjoy your afternoon. You’re welcome.

Weed Candies

We started getting into this when we talked about our chewy favorites, the weed gummy, but what other weed candy is there? Well, almost anything you can imagine! Caramels, lollipops, gum, jawbreakers, jelly beans, chocolate bars, chocolate balls, sour candies and more. Whether you’re indulging in some edible shopping, or making your own batch of sweet or savory marijuana goodies, there’s no limit to the creative (and delicious!) ways you can get your cannabis fix. Weed candies range from “just treats” to functional/remedial: cannabis-infused cough drops, CBD breath mints, or herbal lozenges that include either THC or CBD.

As with most cannabis edibles, the choice of how you get marijuana in your system is up to you. Many people prefer edibles in general over smoking/vaping because of the obvious health risks associated with inhaling smoke, vapor or the chemicals inherent in either. Even more people are finding the convenience of candies is perfect for their “on-the-go” lifestyle. Baking a batch of pot cookies, or creating a culinary cannabis masterpiece for dinner can be very rewarding… and timely, and costly. Need a dose of chill on the train ride home after a long day at the office? Chew on some cannabis gum and work through your stress as easily as you work on your after work treat. Finding it tough to get psyched for a long day of school ahead? Take some CBD candies on your morning commute and notice your focus, energy and mood will improve (and without any “high” to alter your state of mind!). Cannabis edibles truly are a customizable tool as much as they are a tasty treat; any flavor, any shape, any size, any dose.

Weed candy is quickly becoming one of the most sought after treats for many people. You don’t need to be a smoker to enjoy a good high. Put down the bong and light up the oven instead, or reach into a bag of delicious sweets for your daily fix. Cannabis is versatile, and it doesn’t care how you take it… just make sure that you do enjoy all this amazing, one-of-a-kind plant has to offer.
